Scunthorpe Walking Football team edged out of FA People’s Cup
Teams from Lincolnshire and Yorkshire took part in the Walking Football qualifying heats at ‘Goals’ Doncaster an outdoor five-a-side complex of eight pitches, for the FA People’s Cup on Saturday, February 24th.
Scunthorpe had two teams taking part organised by Chris Akers, Golden Years ‘A’ and Golden Years ‘B’ in the tournament with the two finalists qualifying for the next round in Leeds.
The ‘A’ team made a good account of themselves, but failed to make the one of the top two positions of the group while the ‘B’ team topped their group with two wins and a draw, reaching the quarter finals.
They played Grimsby Ancient Mariners, narrowly losing 1-0 to a last minute goal, who themselves went on beat Hull Pacemakers in the semi-final and then only lost on penalties to Leggy Mambos in the final. Both finalists qualified for the next round.
We were right in there with a chance. Unlucky!
Walking football sessions for over 50’s are held locally at Premier Pitches, Kettering Road by Scunthorpe United’s Sport and Education Trust on Monday nights from 5.30pm until 7.00pm.
