It all starts at YES!
Last Summer, over 380 young people from the North Lincolnshire participated on our four-week long National Citizen Service programme.
The young people aged between 15-17 years old embarked on an adrenaline-fuelled adventure trip to locations across the Lake District and the Peak District, taking part in activities such as rock climbing, abseiling and gorge scrambling, taking the young people out of their comfort zones. Following this, the individuals gained skills during the Discovery week in self-defence, graffiti and street art and public speaking.
Alongside this they had visits from ex-professional athletes Paul Broadbent (England and GB rugby League player), Jenny Wallwork (England badminton player) and James Kirton (Great Britain Swimmer) who delivered inspiring stories with sessions designed to develop teamwork, communication and leadership skills. Finally, the young people planned and delivered social action projects in the local community – this included gardening at local care homes, donating new toys for pre-schools as well as raising money and awareness for charities such as Aaron’s Battle, Lindsey Lodge Hospice and Mind.
Graduates from the summer 2018 programme have continued their NCS journey with us by joining the NCS Youth Board, with over 50 Graduates taking part in the Youth Board to date. They have maintained their active engagement in the community by planning and holding a bake sale for Oscar’s chance with the money being raised going to a young boy called Oscar, who is suffering with Cerebral Palsy, to travel to America for a treatment.
Other members of the Youth Board also organised a Bollywood night within the local community which was in aid of Lindsey Lodge Hospice, the night was a huge success, with an Indian themed fashion show, food and dancing. It’s great to see so many of Scunthorpe’s young people giving back to their local communities, being more than willing to give up their own time, while still juggling their studies and employment. The Youth Board are currently well underway with planning another event at Café Indie in Scunthorpe, which will be taking place on the evening of Friday 5th April.
Preparations are underway for the summer 2019 programme.
We have five separate four-week programmes running on the following dates – 1st July, 8th July, 15th July, 29th July and 5th August.
