Futsal B team progress to play-off semi-final
It was a good day for the Iron’s B side in Futsal as they progressed to the semi-finals of their play-off campaign following a 4-3 victory over Mansfield Town A.
Ryan Lidgett put the side ahead before the Stags dragged the score level. Ethan Lowndes and Lidgett’s second put the team in a commanding position at half time.
The opposition halved the deficit to make it 3-2 in the second half before Rio Nicholson restored the two-goal cushion. Mansfield would net the last goal of the game, but United had the last laugh as they progressed.
The story wasn’t as positive for the A side though, who were knocked out on penalties after conceding an equaliser with ten seconds remaining on the close.
After going 2-0 down to a Cambridge United side, Jonty Jackson and Ashley Simpson netted to restore parity before the Iron continued their climb with goals from Ollie Steele and another from Jackson making it 4-2.
At half time, the score was 4-3, but the Us dragged themselves level after the break before Simpson scored his second and Scunthorpe’s fifth.
The scores were again levelled before Kurt Robinson and Morgan Smith made it 7-5 before the encounter was sent to a shoot-out after finishing 7-7. Cambridge progressed from the spot kicks.
